Homemade Flour Tortillas Are So Much Easier Thank You Think... And Way Better.

Updated: Jul 12, 2023

Homemade tortillas are superior to shop-bought ones for a few reasons. Firstly, they are significantly cheaper, allowing you to save money while enjoying a delicious meal. Secondly, the taste of homemade tortillas is unmatched - they are fresh, soft, and bursting with flavour, making every bite a delight. Finally, making them at home is incredibly easy, requiring just a few essential ingredients and minimal effort.

250g plain flour

2 tbsp vegetable oil

1 tsp fine salt

1) Combine the flour, vegetable oil and salt in a bowl with 150ml warm water and knead to bring the mixture together.

2) Remove from the bowl and knead on a lightly floured work surface for around 5 mins until you make a soft, smooth dough ball. Cover with a clean tea towel and rest for at least 15 mins before rolling out. (I usually fill this time with prepping the meat and veg of the meal I'm using these tortillas for).

2) Cut the dough into 8 equal pieces (about 50g each). Roll out each ball of dough as thinly as possible on a floured work surface. They should make rounds about 20 cm wide, and 2mm thick.

3) Heat a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Cook the tortillas for 1-2 mins on each side until golden brown and toasted. Wrap them in foil and cover in a tea towel to keep warm, while you cook the rest.

Keeps for two days well wrapped, or cool, wrap and freeze for up to three months.
